Disaster Assistance Loan Programs

MaineHousing offers low-interest home-repair loans and home-replacement mortgages to homeowners whose homes have been damaged or destroyed in a declared natural disaster.

  • Home repair loans: Eligible homeowners may borrow funds for disaster-related home repairs. Loans are typically offered at low interest rates no payments due and no interest accrual for the first 12 months.
  • Home replacement mortgages: For home replacements, interest rates and terms are typically the same as MaineHousing's First Home program, except of course that you do not need to be a first-time homebuyer.

ELIGIBILITY

You may be eligible for a home repair loan if:

  • You are a homeowner whose primary residence was damaged in an eligible disaster event. Currently there are no active eligible events or areas.
  • Your home is a 1- to 4-unit building, a condominium, or a mobile home located on owned land. (If your mobile home is not permanently attached, part of the repair loan must be used to attach it.)
  • Your household income is within specified limits.

You may be reimbursed for repairs already completed, provided that you can document that the repairs were necessary for health and safety reasons.

You must agree to use any insurance payment or disaster assistance received for the eligible disaster related home repairs to repay your MaineHousing home repair loan.

You may be eligible for a home replacement mortgage if:

  • You are a homeowner whose primary residence was damaged beyond repair in an eligible disaster event. Currently, there are no active eligible events or areas.
  • Your household income does not exceed household income limits,
  • You and the replacement home meet the eligibility and underwriting guidelines of MaineHousing’s First Home Program except, of course, that you do not need to be a first-time homebuyer.

In the case of a flood, you may not be allowed to use MaineHousing financing to rebuild your primary residence in the same location/site where the flooding occurred.
