Weatherization Program

The Weatherization Assistance Program helps eligible Maine households lower energy costs and enjoy a more comfortable, energy efficient home. Trained energy professionals will first evaluate your home and recommend improvements that can reduce energy waste and improve efficiency.  Weatherization services are provided at no cost to eligible households.

Weatherization can help you:

  • Lower heating and electric bills
  • Reduce drafts and cold spots
  • Make your home more comfortable year-round
  • Improve indoor air quality and safety
  • Reduce energy waste
  • Increase the efficiency of your home

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS

Every home is different. That's why weatherization begins with a free home energy assessment.

A trained energy professional will evaluate your home to identify where energy is being lost and determine which improvements will provide the greatest benefit. Based on the assessment, weatherization work may include:

  • Air sealing to reduce drafts
  • Adding insulation in attics, walls, crawl spaces, or basements
  • Heating system efficiency improvements
  • Ventilation improvements
  • Energy-efficient lighting
  • Replacement of certain appliances when appropriate
  • And other energy-saving measures

Not every home will receive the same improvements. Recommendations are based on your home's condition and the results of the energy assessment.

ELIGIBILITY

The Weatherization Assistance Program serves income eligible:

  • Homeowners
  • Renters
  • Owners of eligible 2- to 4-unit residential buildings

Applicants must meet income requirements and eligibility is often based on participation in the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), although some households may qualify under Weatherization income guidelines alone.

HOW TO APPLY

Weatherization services are delivered throughout Maine by Community Action Agencies. Contact your local agency to apply for the program,  learn if you're eligible, ask about current program wait times or learn what other home repair and energy services are available in your area.

If you're eligible, your local Community Action Agency will:

  • Confirm your eligibility.
  • Schedule a home energy assessment.
  • Develop a weatherization plan based on your home's needs.
  • Arrange for approved improvements to be completed.
  • Perform a final inspection to ensure the work meets program standards.

The type and amount of work completed depends on your home's condition, energy needs, and available funding.
