How to Become a Maine Certified Energy Auditor

Becoming a Maine Certified Energy Auditor involves completing a two-week training course and successfully passing a two-part exam.

The training course is made up of two components - theory and field/hands-on training. Each component ends with an exam. To be certified, it is necessary to receive a passing grade on each component within two years. Certification is good for 3 years.

Week 1 – Theory

  • Residential Construction Details
  • Moisture Control
  • Insulation
  • Air Leakage, Caulking & Weatherstripping
  • Heating System Details
  • Water Heating & Baseload
  • Heat Pumps
  • Diagnostic Procedures
  • Exam - Part 1 

Week 2 – Field Exercise

This week consists of hands on training doing an actual energy audit in a home. Reading and homework is assigned throughout the week. The resulting audit report and work order are reviewed and graded.

Certified Energy Auditor Class Dates & Details

Classes are scheduled four times a year; however, depending on the demand, additional classes may be added.

Class Schedule

July 28 - August 8
8:30 AM – 5:00 PM daily
This course will be held at the MaineHousing offices, located at 353 Water Street in Augusta.
The cost for this class is $550.00.
