Home : About Us : Green Initiatives : Winter Harbor Windmill
The wind turbine system shown below is producing energy at the 16-unit Mill Stream Heights affordable apartments for families in Winter Harbor. The system will provide electricity to the common areas of the property and electricity to heat hot water for the residents.
MaineHousing used funds from its Residential Energy Assistance Challenge (REACH) grant to finance the wind turbine. The turbine is a cooperative effort of MaineHousing, Efficiency Maine, the Washington-Hancock Community Action Agency, and the town of Winter Harbor.
MaineHousing also is using the REACH grant to test solar power to provide home domestic hot water, and new technology cold climate heat pumps that which are manufactured in Bangor. Overall, the grant is being used to test alternative energy sources in 200 low-income households over a three year period. MaineHousing will share results of the tests in 2008-09.
